4. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Dmitry Peskov, Russian Presidential spokesman:
"Traditionally, Russia and personally (Russian) President (Vladimir) Putin are an integral part of any election campaign in the United States, especially in recent years. Under Trump, nothing especially good was done for Russia – on the contrary, more and more new restrictions were implemented. But nevertheless, there was a dialogue. It could probably be considered as a positive element."
STORYLINE:
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov on Wednesday dismissed the international investigation into the 2014 MH17 plane crash that killed 298 people, saying “no arguments of the Russian side were taken into account.”

"We did not participate in the investigation and, therefore, our attitude to these conclusions is well known,” Peskov said.

The Kremlin’s comments came as relatives of passengers and crew killed in the accident gathered in Australia and the Netherlands to mark the 10th anniversary of the tragedy.

Over half of the victims were Dutch.

Hundreds of family members joined the Dutch king, politicians and diplomats at an event at a memorial in the Netherlands close to Schiphol, the airport the Kuala Lumpur-bound Boeing 777 departed from on July 17, 2014.

A similar ceremony was held at Australia’s Parliament House in Canberra.

The region from where a Soviet-era Buk surface-to-air missile was fatefully launched and the fields where much of the debris landed after the civilian plane disintegrated is now controlled by the Russian military.

Moscow has repeatedly denied responsibility for MH17’s destruction and refused to hand over two Russians and a Ukrainian separatist convicted by a Dutch court in absentia in 2022 of murder.

The Netherlands was home to 196 victims.

An international investigation initiated in the U.N. Security Council by the Netherlands, Malaysia and Australia concluded that the Buk missile system that destroyed MH17 belonged to the Russian 53rd Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade.

The investigation concluded the missile was driven into Ukraine from a Russian military base near the city of Kursk and returned there after the plane was shot down.

Peskov also refused to comment on the remarks made by the Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong about holding Russia to account over the plane crash tragedy.

Wong told Wednesday’s service in Canberra she was “appalled” that Russia had withdrawn from the International Civil Aviation Organization Council (ICAO) proceedings in June.

“The case will continue and we will not be deterred in our commitment to hold Russia to account,” Wong told the gathering that included foreign diplomats.
