STORYLINE:
Israeli authorities released on Wednesday 13 Palestinians who had been detained for several weeks, the Palestinian Red Crescent Society said.

The Palestinian paramedic group said it took the released prisoners from an Israeli checkpoint in the Gaza Strip to the al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in the central city of Deir al-Balah.

The 13, who include a woman and a man with vision problems, arrived at the hospital later Wednesday.

Zakaria Abu al-Eish said he was detained 55 days ago in the Jabalya refugee camp in north Gaza.

He was caring for his ill father when an Israeli force stormed their home and detained him, Abu al-Eish said.

He said he head endured brutal beatings, insults and eating food that was meant for animals while imprisoned.

"They dealt with us as if we weren’t humans but numbers," he said.

Saeed Badous, another released prisoner, said he was detained while at the Indonesian Hospital near Jabalia 70 days ago.

He said that there were prisoners who were ill, and even amputees, who didn’t receive any medical help or even painkillers.

AP cannot independently verify the testimonies of the released prisoners.

Israeli authorities have denied the Red Cross and other humanitarian groups access to prisons.

Human rights groups have said mass arrests should be investigated and denounced the reported mistreatment of the Palestinians held in prisons and detention centers.

Israel has detained some 4,000 Palestinians since Oct. 7, according to official figures, though roughly 1,500 were released after the military determined they were not affiliated with Hamas.

Israeli human rights groups say the majority of detainees have at some point passed through Sde Teiman, the country’s largest detention center.

Hamas’ October attack killed 1,200 Israelis, mostly civilians, and militants took about 250 hostage.
