3. SOUNDBITE (French) Lieutenant-Colonel Olivier, chief of operations of the Ivry Charenton Battalion:
“The battalion’s particular mission is to secure the boarding area for the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games, and we’ve been deployed for about a fortnight now; we’ll be staying on until the ceremony and of course afterwards. Our resources are quite exceptional in that they provide what we call multi-environment security.”

5. SOUNDBITE (French) Lieutenant-Colonel Olivier, chief of operations of the Ivry Charenton Battalion:
“The spirit of the mission is to ensure the safety of the Opening Ceremony, and that starts right now with the safety of the teams working on the preparations for the Opening Ceremony, the safety of the boats when they arrive in the action zone and then the safety of the athletes when they embark on the phase that will take place on the 26th (Opening Ceremony of Olympic games). This mission is complex and unprecedented. Complex because we are in an environment – Paris, the Seine, the urban area – which is complex. There are vulnerabilities on our perimeter. The Seine is an area with a lot of activities."

9. SOUNDBITE (French) Lieutenant-Colonel Olivier, chief of operations of the Ivry Charenton Battalion:
"We have a multi-modal approach to security, which means that we take the threat in all its dimensions. It starts with the underwater threat. We have deployed sonars at the bottom of the Seine, we have permanent screen copies in the command posts, we have nautical barriers that you may be able to see later on the Seine for the river section, and of course we have elements for the land section. And as far as the third dimension is concerned, we are coordinating closely with the French Air Force, which is responsible for securing the anti-drone system in particular, and here in our area of operation we have equipment capable of carrying out the anti-drone system for the opening ceremony."

15. SOUNDBITE (French) Captain Quentin, commanding a company of the 13th brigade of the Foreign Legion:
“I think that any legionnaire here is aware that we are taking part in a mission that is very much in the spotlight, which is getting a lot of interest, whether in the political news, in the media news. The legionnaires who are here, most of them will be discovering Paris for the first time. So, I think they feel that they are there for something special. And they’re more vigilant and ready for the occasion.”
