“The U.S. has ignored China’s firm opposition and repeated representations, continued arms sales to Taiwan and taken a series of negative actions that seriously harmed China’s core interests, undermined political mutual trust between the two sides, and severely undermined the political atmosphere for the two sides to continue arms control consultations. For this reason, China has decided to suspend holding a new round of negotiations with the U.S. on arms control and non-proliferation. The responsibility for this situation lies entirely with the U.S.”

“China firmly opposes and strongly deplores this and has lodged stern representations with the U.S. In response, China will reciprocally impose visa restrictions on U.S. officials who fabricate lies on China-related human rights issues, promote sanctions against China, and harm China’s interests in accordance with the law.”

STORYLINE:
China on Wednesday said it has decided to suspend the arms control and non-proliferation consultations with the U.S. in protest over its arms sales to Taiwan.
The two countries had their last consultation on nuclear arms control last November, the first such meeting in nearly five years.
China has been accused by U.S. officials of reluctance to hold a new round of the talks over the past half a year.
Chinese Foreign Ministry Lin Jian told a daily news briefing that “the responsibility for this situation lies entirely with the U.S.”
The Biden administration approved a new 360 million U.S. dollar weapons sale to Taiwan in mid-June, sending the island hundreds of armed drones, missile equipment and related support material.
China has long regarded the self-ruled island as a reneged province and opposed the countries having official ties or offering military support to the island.
Lin also slammed the U.S for a recent statement on rolling out more visa restrictions on Chinese officials for their involvement in the repression of marginalized religious and ethnic minorities.
“China will reciprocally impose visa restrictions on U.S. officials who fabricate lies on China-related human rights issues, promote sanctions against China, and harm China’s interests,” Lin warned but didn’t give details.
The statement accused Beijing of the erosion of freedom in Hong Kong and persistent human rights abuses in Xinjiang, saying the U.S. would continue to promote accountability in defense of human rights in China.
