STORYLINE:
Shiite Yemenis observed the holy day of Ashoura on the streets of Sanaa on Tuesday.

Thousands of Yemenis from the Zaydi sect, a Shiite branch of Islam, took to the streets of the capital, waving flags, banners and chanting anti-American, anti-Israel and anti-Zionist slogans.

Ashoura marks the death of Imam Hussein, Prophet Muhammad’s grandson.

Imam Hussein died in 680 AD in the battle of Karbala, in present-day Iraq, during the struggle for the control of Islam following the death of Mohammad.

Zaydi Shiites represent 30 percent of the population of Yemen in the northern provinces.

The Houthis have controlled much of northern Yemen since 2014 when they forced the internationally recognized government to flee from Sanaa.

“We took to the streets of Sanaa and other Yemeni squares to renew the vow and loyalty to Imam Hussein and Ahl al-Bayt," said participant Hamdy Zeyad, referring to the family of the Islamic prophet Muhammad.

"We are following the path with loyalty, patience and sacrifices until we free Palestine," he added.

The Houthis have been organizing protests nearly every Friday since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas to show support for Palestinians.

The rebels have also targeted ships in the Red Sea corridor, disrupting the $1 trillion flow of goods passing through it annually while also sparking the most intense combat the U.S. Navy has seen since World War II.

They aim to pressure Israel and other states that support Israel.
