STORYLINE:
Thousands of Shiite Muslim pilgrims marked Tuesday the holy day of Ashoura in the Iraqi city pf Karbala.

The annual commemoration mourns the 7th century death of the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Hussein, that gave birth to the Shiite faith.

Over 1,340 years after Hussein’s death, thousands of faithful traveled to Karbala, where Hussein is entombed in a gold-domed shrine, to mourn there.

At the procession, some beat their backs with chains in a symbolic expression of regret for not being helping Imam Hussein before his death.

Volunteers also set up camps along the route to the shrine to provide free food and refreshments to all visitors. Iraqi security forces deployed thousands of troops to safeguard pilgrims against possible attacks.

For Shiite Muslims, the remembrance of Imam Hussein is an emotional event that sees many believers grieve over his killing.

Shiites represent over 10% of the world’s 1.8 billion Muslims and view Hussein as the rightful successor to the Prophet Muhammad.

Hussein’s death in battle at the hands of Sunnis at Karbala, south of Baghdad, in 680 AD ingrained a deep rift in Islam and continues to this day to play a key role in shaping Shiite identity.
