"Of course they can make whatever announcements (after Alberto Fujimori was announced a presidential candidate) they want. Whatever they want, but Alberto Fujimori does not have (followers) in the provinces. In the countryside they do not want to know anything about the political parties, starting with Popular Force, which is the main criminal organization in the country. No one want this party, Popular Force, except in Lima."

STORYLINE:
Keiko Fujimori, leader of the Popular Force party, appeared at court Monday where dozens gathered to support or protest the continuation of the Fujimori family in Peruvian politics.
Fujimori is being investigated for money laundering charges involving up to $17.3 million during two of her three stints as a presidential candidate.
$1.2 of the total amount were allegedly obtained from the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht.
If Fujimori is found guilty of the charges, the prosecutor’s office has requested 30 years in prison and the dissolution of the political party she leads, Popular Force.
Keiko Fujimori has spent 18 months in prison since 2018 as part of a preventive measure not to obstruct justice in the same probe.
This fifth audience in the trial took place just a day after Keiko announced that her father, former president Alberto Fujimori, intends to run as presidential candidate in the 2026 general election.
After leaving court, Fujimori said the charges are a "political persecution."
Alberto Fujimori, 85 years of age, was released from prison in December after Peru’s top court granted him a previous presidential pardon.
He was convicted in 2009 of involvement in the killing of 25 Peruvians during his administration in 1992, has three convictions on corruption charges and owes about $15 million to the Treasury, according to the Attorney General’s Office specializing in corruption crimes.
