STORYLINE:
Shiites across Iran are mourning the 7th-century martyrdom of the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Hussein.
Faithful in Tehran observe an annual 10-day mourning period leading up to the somber day of Ashoura, when Hussein was tragically killed in the battle of Karbala.
Plays known as Ta’azieh, narrating the story of the battle, are one of the most captivating parts of the mourning rituals held in the capital of Iran.
Actors passionately sing poems, telling the tale of Hussein and how his small army bravely battled the enemy.
Many of the audience members weep as they watch these emotional performances.
Ashoura – the peak of the mourning procession – is marked on the 10th day of the Islamic month of Muharram, which coincides with Tuesday this year.
Black tents and flags have been installed everywhere in Tehran to hold mourning rituals every night in the lead-up up to Ashoura.
Free meals are distributed to mourners and others at the end of the ceremonies.
"Iranians as you know perform this (mourning) spontaneously. All of them love Imam Hussein. They all serve him," said Tehran resident Hadi Akbari.
Shiites represent over 10% of the world’s 1.8 billion Muslims and view Hussein as the rightful successor to the Prophet Muhammad.
