STORYLINE:
A baby boy and his grandmother were killed when an Israeli airstrike hit an apartment in Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip on Monday.
Officials said a man passing by in the street was also killed, and a number of people were injured in the strike on the house in al-Salam neighbourhood.
The bodies of the dead and the injured were taken to the Al Aqsa hospital in the city, including at least one man and a teenager who were apparently pulled from under the rubble.
Inside the hospital, the dead baby boy was placed on top of the body of his dead grandmother’s body, which was resting next to the remains of a dead man.
Outside the hospital, men later gathered to say prayers for the baby and its grandmother, before their remains were taken away by relatives to be buried.
A total of 38,664 Palestinians have been killed and 89,097 injured since the war began in October, according to Gaza health officials.
Israel launched its military campaign in Gaza after Hamas attacked southern Israel on Oct. 7, killing some 1,200 Israelis, and taking 250 others hostage.
