3. SOUNDBITE (English) Omar Flores, co-chairman of the March on the RNC Coalition:
“This is not new for us. We’ve been organizers for many years. We know exactly how to de-escalate. And we’re feeling very confident when we’re coming into this. We have over 100 marshals that are trained in de-escalation, people that do have experience at, like, encampments and other intense situations. We have, over 30 medics that are actually medically trained. These are not just random people off the street. These are people with healthcare experience. And so, these are all preparations that we had before the news yesterday.”

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Omar Flores, co-chairman of the March on the RNC Coalition:
“For the past two years, all across this country, we pulled together a broad, a broad grouping of community organizations, unions, students, immigrant rights, LGBTQ, antiwar groups, and many others. We have not had safety issues at any of our several marches or events, and we look forward to our family friendly march tomorrow.”

STORYLINE:
Activists gathering in Milwaukee for the first day of Republican National Convention say they’ll continue their long-awaited plans for marches and rallies Monday in the wake of an apparent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
The activists are hoping to call attention to issues such as abortion rights, economic justice, and the war in Gaza. The largest group is the Coalition to March on the RNC.
They’ll kick off the demonstrations with a rally and march around the downtown convention site.
They’ve been at odds with the city and law enforcement over a route. Late last week, they said they reached a “handshake agreement” with city officials on a route.
