Women are now at the wheel of every bus on Hong Kong’s route 69. It’s the first time a bus route has been exclusively driven by female drivers in Hong Kong.

It started at the beginning of July, with eleven women doing the daily route between the suburbs of Tin Shui Wai and Yuen Long, deep in Hong Kong’s New Territories area, close to the border with mainland China.

STORYLINE:

The city’s biggest bus operator Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB) wants to promote women into the driving seat and change the social impression that bus driving is just for men.

So it’s staffing one of its routes exclusively with females.

Fifty-year-old Zhang is one of the drivers on route 69.

She is a veteran of seven years at the wheel and knows what it’s like to face passengers who doubt her skills.

“Nowadays, some people when they see it’s a woman bus driver, they say ‘wow, woman bus driver, it doesn’t really feel safe,’” she says.

But Zhang is confident she can do her job well.

“I think we female bus drivers have got a softer touch than our male colleagues. We are a bit more patient and approachable," she says.

"If there are passengers who get on and want to be rude, when they see it’s a woman driver, they might not talk like that.”

Kowloon Motor Bus hopes to attract more women to join its ranks by creating a more female-friendly environment.

That includes this “female staff priority rest kiosk” with changing space and armchair. The pink kiosk is accessible to women drivers 24 hours a day.

Passenger Wing Chan believes Hong Kong is an equal society and says there’s no difference between male and female bus drivers.

“Nowadays, men and women are equal, so we don’t have to make any difference between male and female,” he says.

Passenger Mavis Cheung welcomes more female bus drivers.

Kowloon Motor Bus started hiring female drivers in 1989.
