STORYLINE:
Thousands gathered in Srinagar in Indian-administered Kashmir to observe a religious procession marking the Muslim month of Muharram and voiced their condemnation of Israel’s offensive in Gaza.
Chants against Israel and America echoed through the streets as mourners decried the ongoing strife in Gaza.
"In today’s world Gaza is Karbala. Innocent people are killed mercilessly and martyred" said Irshad Hussain, a participant in the procession.
The mourners carried Palestinian flags and placards denouncing the conflict.
Muharram commemorates the martyrdom of the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Imam Hussein, and his companions in the Battle of Karbala in the seventh century, in present-day Iraq.
