2. Olympic rings outside the stadium
3. Nazi eagle above what used to be a swastika on the former Reich Sports Field around Olympiastadion
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Ryan Balmer, Berlin tour guide:
“When they carpet bombed the city, they are still really aiming for the built-up areas in the center of Berlin. And the Olympic Stadium, then and now, is quite far away from those areas. So, we think it mostly survived by accident. It survived the postwar era because the British authorities who controlled this part of Berlin, or West Berlin back then, didn’t really feel that it carried the weight of taboo as much as some other Nazi buildings. It also survived, I think, because it was very practical. The British authorities actually used many of the buildings.”
5. The Olympic sports school building on the grounds of the former Reich Sports Field
6. Close up of a statue outside the Olympic sports school
7. Wide of former administration buildings for the 1936 Olympics
8. Information display on opposition to the Nazi-hosted Olympic Games, including a map of Germany showing the prisons and concentration camps that had already been built at the time of the tournament
9. Visitors to an exhibition about soccer in Nazi Germany in one of the administration buildings on the grounds of the former Reich Sports Field
10. SOUNDBITE (English) Ryan Balmer, Berlin tour guide:
“There was a lot of concern in the early days about the Nazis not allowing Jewish athletes to compete in the German team. That seems to fade away once the spectacle actually begins. And I think what the IOC did at the time was, quite naively, give Nazi Germany an opportunity to show a face of themselves to the world, which they very clearly managed.”

12. Entrance barriers at Olympiastadion before it hosts the Euro 2024 final on Sunday, July 14, 2024
13. Close up of a sign saying “rejection line” at the entrance to Olympiastadion
14. SOUNDBITE (English) Ryan Balmer, Berlin tour guide:
“The use of the buildings after the war also helps define people’s relationship to them. We see this as a Nazi building, but we also see it as, you know, a stadium associated with the rebirth of West Germany, the rehabilitation of West Germany in the postwar era. You know, the 1974 World Cup, or especially the 2006 World Cup."

STORYLINE:
Spain and England will play the European Championship final on Sunday in an imposing stadium with a dark history.

Built for the 1936 Olympic Games, Berlin’s Olympic stadium still bears the scars of World War II and contains relics from its Nazi past.

But the Olympiastadion, as it’s known in German, is also associated with the rebirth of a democratic Germany after the war. It hosted matches during the 1974 World Cup in what was then West Germany and again at the 2006 World Cup, 16 years after German reunification.

Adolf Hitler was personally involved in the design and construction of the 100,000-seat track-and-field stadium after the Nazis assumed power in 1933, two years after Germany had been awarded the 1936 Games.

Initially unenthused by the idea of hosting the Games, the Nazi dictator changed his mind after being convinced of their potential for propaganda.
