STORYLINE:
Children and young men in northern Gaza lined up to collect food being distributed by a local soup kitchen, offering a hot meal for families as aid supplies shrink.
Crowds huddled around pots of cracked wheat cooked in tomato sauce in Jabaliya refugee camp.
Charity workers filled pots and plates with whatever those gathered could carry. Some in line were toddlers carrying pots as big as themselves.
The Israeli offensive launched in response to Hamas’ October 7 attack has plunged Gaza into a humanitarian crisis.
Over 80% of the territory’s 2.3 million people have been displaced, with most now living in squalid tent camps.
International experts say hundreds of thousands of people are on the brink of famine.
Aid restrictions and continued fighting have severely hampered aid distribution and delivery as well, leaving people scrambling for food.
The situation is particularly bleak in northern Gaza. People have mostly survived on wild plants and flour.
With food and supplies critically low and nearly 300,000 people in the north living in tent camps, shelters or destroyed buildings, soup kitchens have become a lifeline for families deprived of hot meals.
