“The reason why I support the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda is so clear, that their manifesto is so clear to Rwandans, their manifesto talks about promoting social justice. Here we talk about the removal of the transit centres which has been a very big problem that Rwandans are facing. So having seen this in their manifesto, this strongly makes me a very big supporter of this party.”

STORYLINE:
A Rwandan presidential candidate managed to attract just 100 supporters to a rally on the final day of campaigning ahead of Monday’s election, when President Paul Kagame is widely expected to win a fourth term in office.

Frank Habineza of the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda (DGP) and independent contender Philippe Mpayimana, have struggled to pull crowds to their events.

President Kagame of the Rwanda Patriotic Front (FPR), who also held a rally on Saturday, is running virtually unopposed after three decades in power in the eastern African nation.

Kagame, 66, took power as the leader of rebels who took control of Rwanda’s government and ended the genocide in 1994.

Kagame was Rwanda’s vice president and de facto leader from 1994 to 2000, when he first became president.

He has since ruled the East African country as an authoritarian who is intolerant of political dissent.
