STORYLINE:
Thousands of Yemeni demonstrators took to the streets of Sanaa following Friday prayers to express support for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

The Houthi rebels have been organizing protests nearly every Friday since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas.

One protester said they have been gathering to send a "big message to America, Israel, Britain, Saudi Arabia in particular, and the Emirates".

The Houthis have controlled much of northern Yemen since 2014 when they forced the internationally recognized government to flee from Sanaa.

They have battled a Saudi-led coalition into a stalemate in a wider war that’s killed more than 150,000 people, including civilians, and created one of the world’s worst humanitarian disasters.

In response to the Gaza war, the rebels have targeted ships in the Red Sea corridor, disrupting the $1 trillion flow of goods passing through it annually while also sparking the most intense combat the U.S. Navy has seen since World War II.

They aim to pressure Israel and other states that support Israel.

Israel launched its campaign in Gaza after Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack in which militants stormed into southern Israel, killed some 1,200 people — mostly civilians — and abducted about 250.

Since then, Israeli ground offensives and bombardments have killed more than 38,300 people in Gaza, according to the territory’s Health Ministry. It does not distinguish between combatants and civilians in its count.

More than 80% of Gaza’s 2.3 million people have been driven from their homes, and most are now crowded into squalid tent camps, facing widespread hunger.
