"I did not put Omar on the ground, nor was I able to put him in the mortuary. It was difficult for me to put him on the ground and look at him. I kept him in my lap. I preferred to have his blood on me and not put him on the ground. When they took him from me, I told them not to put him on the ground. My son is dear to me. He should not be thrown on the ground. They took him directly to shroud him, and it was easier for me that they shroud him than that he be placed on the ground.”

“It was a very difficult moment. Children in Gaza do not find safety to play. There is no safe place for them to play. I was afraid that my children would go out into the street and that I would lose them all at once.”

“I was very afraid that what I saw happening to other people’s children would happen to my children. I often saw innocent children die from the bombing and families lost children. I was very afraid of losing my children, I love my children very much, especially Omar. I was afraid of losing him. When I went out, he always joined me, but I stopped him from being my companion during the war, for fear that there would be bombing and Omar and I would die together”

"I depended on him for everything. He used to say to me, ‘Dad, I will make you proud of me’. And I was actually proud of him, for his intelligence, obedience, and affection for us. He was a very special boy, very special. (He stood out) among the rest of the children in the neighbourhood, and from his brothers, in everything."

STORYLINE:
He wouldn’t let him go. Nael Al-Baghdadi held his 12-year-old son, Omar, and held him tight. But it was already too late. Omar, who was playing outside near his home, had been killed on Tuesday in the Gaza Strip by an Israeli airstrike.
In video captured by the Associated Press in the Deir al Balah hospital, al-Baghdadi held his son, whose small body rested limply in his arms. His right hand and right shirt sleeve were streaked with blood.
Grief was etched upon the father’s face as he sobbed for the child he just lost.
The father insisted on holding Omar, uninterrupted.
He refused to put his son on the ground inside the morgue, holding him gently until he was shrouded and the funeral prayer was performed before a quick burial.
