2. SOUNDBITE (English) Larry Neumeister, The Associated Press:
"The trial of New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez is in closing arguments. This morning, a prosecutor finished five hours of closing arguments. And this afternoon, defense lawyer Adam Fee, for Menendez, a Democrat, began his closing argument saying that prosecutors had failed to prove even one charge against him, saying there was no real proof that the senator had accepted any bribes at all, there’s no emails, text messages in which he says, ‘hey, if you do this, if you give me this, I’ll do this in return.’ And thus they say, you really can’t convict the senator. But prosecutors provided very much evidence during seven weeks of the trial and a five hour closing argument in which they insisted there was lots of proof that Senator Menendez accepted over $100,000 in gold bars and along with cash, that was over $480,000. Both were found in a raid on his wife’s house in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, in 2022."

3. SOUNDBITE (English) Larry Neumeister, The Associated Press:
"Right now, we’re halfway through the defense argument for Senator Menendez. The lawyer, Adam Fee, will continue his argument in the morning. He says he’s got about two-and-a-half hours to go. After he finishes, two more defense lawyers for two other defendants – New Jersey businessman who allegedly bribed the senator – will then make their closing arguments. After that, prosecutors will have a rebuttal argument, and only then will the judge read instructions on the law and give the case to the jury, likely on Thursday."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Larry Neumeister, The Associated Press:
"For the last two months, New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez has been on trial on charges that he accepted cash, gold bars and a luxury car in return for favors he did three New Jersey businessmen so that they could have enhanced business prospects. He has denied it, said it’s not true, and his lawyer today presented arguments to say prosecutors had failed to prove any of the multiple charges against him."

STORYLINE:
A lawyer for Sen. Bob Menendez at the Democrat’s bribery trial has urged jurors to acquit him of every charge, saying prosecutors had failed to prove a single count beyond a reasonable doubt.
The defense attorney began his summation Tuesday afternoon before a New York City federal court jury.
He spoke after a prosecutor finished about five hours of argument in which he said Menendez had engaged in “wildly abnormal” behavior.
Menendez has pleaded not guilty to charges that he accepted bribes including gold and hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash from three New Jersey businessmen.
His trial entered its ninth week on Monday.
