“Mr (Emmanuel) Macron is in the process of finding arguments to justify taking on the behaviour of those he got elected, that is to say those of the New Popular Front, who today are showing fractious attitudes because they are calling to use force to get to the Matignon (Prime Minister’s post), that’s what we can glean from it. Yesterday was the National Assembly, it is an assault on the capitol, so it is Emmanuel Macron who has to own this politically because he’s the one who got them elected.”

“Jordan Bardella has very clearly responded to you. He clearly said that there were some great victories. The quasi-totality of our candidates have behaved in a remarkable way under difficult conditions.”

Le Pen: “They (members of the National Rally) were confronted by violence, the same violence we are confronted with in this Assembly. Once again those who behaved badly will obviously be held to account and as usual we do not make a habit of being lax and therefore sanctions that could go as far as exclusion will be announced.”

STORYLINE:
The leader of France’s far right National Rally, Marine Le Pen, blamed President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday for empowering leftist forces’ lunge for power after her party underperformed in the latest legislative election.

Le Pen, greeted by a media scrum as she entered the National Assembly courtyard for a customary photo opportunity with newly elected lawmakers, said: “Macron is in the process of finding arguments to justify taking on the behaviour of those he got elected, that is to say those of the New Popular Front, who today are showing fractious attitudes because they are calling to use force to get to the Matignon.”

Adrien Quatennens, a former France Unbowed lawmaker who pulled out of the campaign and decided not to seek re-election, accused Macron on Tuesday of wanting to "steal our victory" — even though the left-wing coalition, like the other two main blocs, fell well short of winning a majority.

The ex-lawmaker, who is no longer a major player in the current parliamentary crisis, asked whether there should be "a big march by the people" toward Matignon, the offices of the prime minister in Paris.

A France Unbowed leader, Manuel Bompard, said on Wednesday that the party is not calling for a march on Matignon.

During her remarks, Le Pen also said that some of her party members were “confronted by violence, the same violence we are confronted with in this Assembly,” and threatened “sanctions that could go as far as exclusion.”

The National Rally is set to be represented by 123 elected members, a new high but still short of majority, leaving leftist and Green parties in a position to form coalitions.

The RN’s increased presence in the legislature marks a significant shift in French politics and is set to make an impact on the country’s political landscape. However it came in third in the second round of elections after a much stronger showing in the first round. That was due to what is known as the "republican front", in which parties cooperated in order to block the RN’s ascent.
