1. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Sherrod Brown, (D) Ohio:
(Reporter: Do you still support President Biden?)
“Ohioans have legitimate questions about what President Biden is going to do.”
(Reporter: That’s not a yes.)

2. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Richard Blumenthal, (D) Connecticut:
“As the Democratic candidate Joe Biden has my support, and I am very encouraged that he is more aggressively making his case to the American people.”

3. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Richard Blumenthal, (D) Connecticut:
“I’ve heard concerns from colleagues. I think that the president needs to address them, along with, more importantly, frankly, the concerns that I’ve heard from people around the country. But I think he is energetically and effectively addressing those concerns, and he needs to continue to make that case the American people earn their support.”
(Reporter: Do you personally have any concerns about his mental acuity or any concerns at all?)
“From what I’ve seen of President Biden, and I was with him in Normandy for the 80th anniversary of D-Day, his acuity is consistent and strong. And I think as commander in chief, he’s continued to do good things with the same kind of effective knowledge and awareness that he’s brought to this office for the last three and a half years.”

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Dick Durbin, (D) Illinois:
(Reporter: Senator Durbin, do you have any concerns about President Biden being on the ticket?)
“Of course I do. And I think what he is trying to address those directly by the style and nature of his campaign. I think he’s aware of the fact that what happened at that debate was disastrous.”
(Reporter: What are your concerns?)
“Concerns is whether or not that was a one off situation, or whether there’s more to more to the issue? Secondly, what is the nature of his campaign moving forward? We’ve got to defeat Donald Trump. And so I hope that President Biden is working on the strategy to achieve that goal.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Dick Durbin, (D) Illinois:
“At this point, I would say to the president, the challenges to you. Show us in the way you campaign that you can effectively beat Donald Trump. Show us that you’re a good candidate, and I believe he is, and that what we saw in that debate night is not typical of what we’re going to see in the future.”

STORYLINE:
President Joe Biden is standing firm against calls for him to drop his reelection candidacy and calling for an end to the intraparty drama that has torn apart Democrats since his dismal debate performance.

Some key lawmakers are expressing support for him to remain in the 2024 presidential race, while others seem torn on how to proceed with their support.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal, (D) Connecticut, says Joe Biden has his support and he’s encouraged by seeing Biden taking a more energetic approach to the campaign, although he knows concerns are still relevant.

“I’ve heard concerns from colleagues. I think that the president needs to address them, along with, more importantly, frankly, the concerns that I’ve heard from people around the country. But I think he is energetically and effectively addressing those concerns, and he needs to continue to make that case the American people earn their support,” Blumenthal said.

Meanwhile, Sen. Dick Durbin, (D) Illinois, says that the challenge is now up to the president.
