4. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Karim Shaii, man displaced from Tikrit in Salahaddin:
"After 10 years of displacement, I have seen suffering along with my family, and our houses were destroyed because of terrorism. Thank God for everything. They have given us four million dinars (about $3,000) and home appliances, a cooker, TV, and a fridge, thankfully. The people and officials in Kurdistan treated us very well."

9. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Aliya Alwan, displaced from Tikrit in Salahaddin:
"It has been 10 years of suffering, living in the cold under tents made of plastic and dealing with injustice. Had we had the means, we wouldn’t have stayed in tents, and this wouldn’t have happened to us. So we call on (Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia) al-Sudani and the government ministers to help us as the four million dinars won’t do much. Now, we are returning to our area and want them to help us because the four million dinars won’t build a single room made from (concrete) blocks."

STORYLINE:
The last group of displaced Iraqi families left Ashti camp in Sulaymaniyah on Tuesday after years spent away from home as Iraq plans to close all displacement camps by the end of July.

Displaced families loaded their belongings onto trucks in the camp, which is located in the semi-autonomous Kurdish region of northern Iraq.

Sixty families left the camp on Tuesday and headed to their home areas in the provinces of Salahaddin and Nineveh.

Most of those families have been living in the camp since 2014, when the Islamic State group rampaged across the country’s northern areas.

"After 10 years of displacement, I have seen suffering along with my family, and our houses were destroyed because of terrorism," said Karim Shaii, a displaced man who was preparing to leave the camp.

Those who left the camp on Tuesday were mostly Sunni Arabs from the cities of Tikrit and Mosul.

They escaped the violence and were hesitant to return home even after their areas were retaken from IS by Iraqi security forces and Iran-backed Shiite paramilitary groups.

Sulaymaniyah province had four major camps for the displaced people, located in Kifri, Kalar, Arbat, and the city of Sulaymaniyah.

The camps used to host 2,450 displaced families, mostly Sunni Arabs from Tikrit, Diyala, Babil, and Mosul, along with 110 Yazidi families from Sinjar.

But many of those returning say that isn’t enough as their homes were destroyed, while others feel that it may not be safe to return.
