“The French people want change. They expressed this three times in a row. They expressed (this) for the European elections, then at the first and second rounds. So we must listen to their message and given that there was a Republican front (against Nationally Rally) and contrary to Emmanuel Macron who himself was elected twice thanks to this Republican front, one mustn’t have contempt for those who made the choice for the Left as opposed to the far right.”

7. SOUNDBITE (French) Olivier Faure, Socialist Party leader: “Emmanuel Macron was sanctioned harshly three times in a row so it’s logical and normal that we apply policies that are a break from those in the current government. This doesn’t prevent dialogue. This doesn’t prevent conciliation. This doesn’t prevent the fact that the parliament once again has its full power. But it also implies that the Head of State understands that he no longer has a hand in it.”

9. SOUNDBITE (French) Boris Vallaud, Socialist Party lawmaker:
“What’s at stake is responding to the French people who told us things in this election. They told us it was increasingly difficult to live off of their jobs even when you have one. They told us the end of the month was the fifteenth of the month, not the thirtieth. They have asked for an increase to their purchasing power, for the public services for those without means, to function well. They spoke about housing; they spoke about tranquility in their daily lives. We need to respond to all these things if we want to maintain a Republican Front and keep the National Rally at bay.”

STORYLINE:
Former Socialist President Francois Hollande and other newly elected French lawmakers from the leftist coalition made a grand entrance Tuesday at the National Assembly for talks seeking to cobble together a government.
The coalition won the most seats but no absolute majority after the second round of legislative elections on Sunday.
Lawmakers from the Green party and far left France Unbowed, including its leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon, came to the National Assembly earlier Tuesday.
Hollande, elected from his home constituency of Correze in southwest France, joined other newly elected lawmakers from the Socialist Party for a group photo.
President Emmanuel Macron has asked his Prime Minister Gabriel Attal to continue handling day-to-day affairs, less than three weeks before the start of the Paris Olympics.
Sunday’s election left no faction even close to the majority needed to form a government.
While a fractured parliament is not uncommon in Europe, the situation is unprecedented in France’s modern history.
Leaders of the leftist coalition, the New Popular Front, which won the most seats, say they should form a new government.
Their talks are complicated by internal divisions.
