STORYLINE:
Thousands of Shiite Muslims marched toward the holy shrine of Imam Hussein in central Iraq on Monday as they marked the start of the Muslim month of Muharram in the city of Karbala.
Muharram is among the holiest months for Shiite Muslims and marks the martyrdom of the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Imam Hussein, and his companions in the battle of Karbala in the seventh century.
Pilgrims at Karbala arrived from Baghdad, Basra and many other Iraqi provinces.
The event also attracts pilgrims from countries with Shiite populations such as Iran, Lebanon, Kuwait, Pakistan, and Bahrain.
Volunteers set up camps along the route to the Imam Hussein shrine to provide free food and refreshments to visitors.
Imam Hussein is one of Shia Islam’s most important figures and was seen by his followers as the rightful heir of the prophet’s legacy.
When he refused to pledge allegiance to the Umayyad caliphate, he was killed in the battle, cementing a schism that led to the split between the Sunni and Shia sects of Islam.
The mourning reaches its peak on Ashura, the 10th day of the month in the Islamic lunar calendar, when pilgrims perform ceremonial chest-beating and flagellating themselves with chains to inflict pain on themselves in a symbolic expression of sharing the pain their Imam went through on the day he died.
