"The atmosphere is very nice. It was really not stressful. So when a manoeuvre has to happen, everyone is like, oh we are going to do that and that and that, and we just have to do it. So we learn a lot, like the names of the sails and the ropes and also plotting on the cards, on the map. We learned, what do we learn? A lot about how sailing works actually."

Docked in the Finnish capital’s harbour, these majestic ships look they belong in another era.

The traditional vessels are taking part in this year’s Tall Ship Races.

The international charity sailing race is normally held every four years but returns to the Baltic Sea after a seven-year hiatus because the planned 2021 competition was cancelled due to COVID-19.

There are 50 ships from 13 different countries, and they come in many different shapes and sizes.

The crews include young people who are not seasoned sailors, but are keen to learn new skills.

"The atmosphere is very nice. It was really not stressful. So when a manoeuvre has to happen, everyone is like, oh we are going to do that and that and that, and we just have to do it," says 20 year-old Joke Vandecasteele, a student from Belgium.
