"I think it is better (for the new governor) to have stability. While this election is a bit crowded, I voted for whom I think is stable."
4. Close of candidate posters
5. SOUNDBITE (Japanese) Kikui (No first name given), 80-year-old local resident:
"We need a change. Yes, some praise for (incumbent Governor Yuriko) Koike for hosting the Olympics, but that was with a huge expense. The nature being destroyed and selling the land for the Olympic Village at one-tenth of the price… on top of a lot of corruption within. And now we are facing the Jingu Gaien redevelopment. If we don’t change now we will fall apart."

7. SOUNDBITE (Japanese) No name given, 72-year-old local resident:
"Firstly, I appreciate a person of action. That is the most important factor when it comes to an election."

STORYLINE:
Voters headed to polls in Tokyo on Sunday morning with different hopes as they elect a new governor.

One resident who gave only her surname, Kikui, explained how she had seen the city she had grown up in change over the years – now with less and less nature around her.

"We need a change," Kikui said.

"If we don’t change now, we will fall apart."

A record 56 candidates, including incumbent Governor Yuriko Koike, who seeks her third four-year term, and her opposition-backed challenger Renho, are running in the vote.

Polls close at 1100GMT Sunday and the official results not expected until the following day.

Tokyo, a city of 13.5 million, has outsized political and cultural power in Japan.
