STORYLINE:
Two days into Venezuela’s election campaign for the July 28 presidential vote, opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez arrived Saturday in Barinas, a western state once considered a stronghold of the government, where he led a massive rally.

The 74-year-old former diplomat, led a caravan that travelled through the central streets of that city with opposition leader María Corina Machado, whom he replaced in the presidential race after she received a government ban on her running for office.

From a stage and after emphasizing that he represents the option for change in Venezuela, the opposition candidate told his supporters to "turn that desire of change into votes. I count on you and you count on me."

Machado told supporters that they have already defeated their opponents.

"Today, we understand that in just 22 days, we have that key for the future we have fought so hard for," she said.

Barinas is the home state of the late President Hugo Chavez, Maduro’s mentor, and an impregnable bastion of the ruling party for more than two decades.

But over time, the support of Barinas residents for the ruling party has diminished, according to analysts. In 2022, the residents of that region elected opposition candidate Sergio Garrido as governor.
