STORYLINE:
Argentina’s Association of State Workers (ATE) organised a mass protest in front of the Casa Rosada in Buenos Aires on Friday, to oppose recent layoffs.

The union reports 3,000 more workers have been dismissed, adding to the 20,000 workers laid off since December.

As part of the protest, organizers set up a "community pot", which they said symbolized the hunger and unemployment affecting state workers.

The protest included a nationwide general strike of all ATE members.

The union emphasized the need for continued street protests to halt the government’s actions.

The government headed by firebrand Javier Milei aims to dismiss a total of 70,000 public employees as part of a fiscal adjustment plan. The government has justified these dismissals saying they are part of economic restructuring.

Part of the layoffs affects those tasked with investigating and charging crimes committed during Argentina’s dictatorship, including government workers who review archive material from the dictatorship when no witnesses remain alive to testify.

The victims of the dictatorship, known as the "disappeared", are still front and centre of many Argentine minds.

Until democracy was restored in 1983, at least 30,000 people had disappeared.

The union criticised the government’s quarterly renewal of contracts, which has led to increased job insecurity and more frequent lay-offs.
