6. SOUNDBITE (English) Ella Gould, hospitality worker:
"It feels like young people were voting this year because we really needed a change, like very desperately. So it’s really good to wake up this morning and feel like there’s something in the air that feels different. I feel like London was stuck in a big standstill, and I feel like we weren’t progressing or moving, and I think we had a Conservative parliament for so long. And everyone was struggling underneath that for so long and it kind of felt hopeless. So today feels like a win in a sense for younger people, that we might have some hope in our future that we might not have had a couple months ago or a couple of years ago.”

"Probably, again, my main concern is rising of taxes which, again, as Rishi Sunak said is in the DNA of the Labour party.”

STORYLINE:
People in the London constituency of Kensington and Bayswater expressed mixed reactions at the result of the national elections on Friday, where the area swung from Labour to Conservative.

The left-wing Labour party was voted into power for the first time in fourteen years, winning 412 out of 650 possible seats in the UK’s parliament.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer officially became the country’s prime minister, receiving the blessing of King Charles III to form a government on Friday.

Earlier in the day former prime minister and leader of the Conservative party Rishi Sunak offered the King his resignation.

In Kensington and Bayswater, a largely affluent area with pockets of social deprivation which was shocked by the devastating Grenfell Tower fire in 2017, had mixed responses to Starmer’s win.

"Disappointed that Labour has won but obviously not surprised at all. We did see it coming," said one local.

"Fantastic. Best thing that’s ever happened. Get rid of these Tories. Fourteen years. We’re done. We’ve had enough," added another.
