"Hezbollah militants have fired over 200 rockets into northern Israel. This is one of the heaviest barrages in nearly nine months of fighting, and comes a day after Israel killed a senior Hezbollah commander in Lebanon. Israel says that one soldier was killed in this latest barrage. Hezbollah began attacking Israel almost immediately after Israel’s war with Hamas erupted last October 7th. Hezbollah says the fighting will not end until there’s a cease-fire in Gaza. Now, cease-fire talks have repeatedly faltered in recent months, but there are some new signs for optimism. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he is dispatching a team of negotiators to meet with international mediators to resume cease-fire talks. This comes a day after Hamas submitted a new proposal in response to the latest U.S. plan for ending this war. Now, there are no signs of breakthrough, but the fact that the sides are beginning to talk again gives some hope that international mediators can finally find that elusive formula to end nine months of war in Gaza."

STORYLINE:
The Lebanese Hezbollah group said it launched over 200 rockets on Thursday at several military bases in Israel in retaliation for a strike that killed one of its senior commanders.

The attack by the Iran-backed militant group was one of the largest in the monthslong conflict along the Lebanon-Israel border, with tensions escalating in recent weeks.

The Israeli military said "numerous projectiles and suspicious aerial targets" had entered its territory from Lebanon, many of which it said were intercepted. It confirmed the death of one soldier in the barrage.

It said about 200 “projectiles” were launched toward the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights and over 20 drones into Israeli territory, but that it had intercepted some of them.

After Hezbollah’s attack, Israel struck various towns in southern Lebanon.

The Israeli military said it hit Hezbollah’s “military structures” in the southern border towns of Ramyeh and Houla.

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported that an Israeli drone strike of Houla killed at least one person.

Israeli jets also broke the sound barrier over the Lebanese capital, Beirut, and other areas in the country.

It comes as the revival of Israel-Hamas cease-fire talks in the nine month war appeared to mark another attempt by U.S., Qatari and Egyptian mediators to overcome the gap that has repeatedly thwarted a deal over the past months.

Hamas wants a deal that ensures Israeli troops fully leave Gaza and the war ends; Israeli Benjamin Netanyahu says the war cannot end before Hamas is eliminated.

Israeli negotiators are expected to arrive in Doha, Qatar’s capital, for the talks as early as Friday, with American, Egyptian and Qatari officials present.

So far, neither side appears to have fully embraced it.

Last month, Hamas suggested “amendments” to the proposal, some of which the U.S. said were unworkable.
