STORYLINE:
Thousands of Palestinians are seeking refuge in the Yarmouk Sports Stadium in Gaza City, after fleeing a renewed offensive by Israeli forces in the city’s eastern Shijaiyah neighbourhood.

The Israeli army has in recent days been battling militants in the Shijaiyah area, once again forcing entire families to evacuate and move to overcrowded shelters.

“We have been displaced more than once,” said Um Bashar, who had to move with her family suddenly last week when Israeli forces entered.

“The last place was last week, the Shijaiyah neighbourhood. We woke up and found tanks in front of the door. We did not take anything with us, neither a mattress, nor a pillow, nor anything. Clothes or anything, not even food,” she said.

Israel returned to the neighbourhood months after saying it had completed operations in the area.

Hamas has repeatedly regrouped in hard-hit areas after Israeli troops pulled out.

The latest operation has sent thousands of residents fleeing.

The army said it has killed dozens of militants and confiscated weapons from a hideout it said Hamas had kept in a United Nations-supported school.

“There is no safe place. Safety is with God, thanks God. Everywhere we go there are bombings and incursions. Fear has become not only among children as well as adults,” said Um Ahmad, another displaced in Northern Gaza Strip.

The war in Gaza has killed more than 38,000 Palestinians, Gaza’s Health Ministry said. The ministry does not differentiate between combatants and civilians in its count, but it includes thousands of women and children.

The Israeli attack in the enclave followed the Hamas attack on October 7th in southern Israel where about 1200 were killed and 250 were taken as hostages.

Cease-fire talks appeared to be reviving after stalling for weeks.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said Thursday he was sending negotiators to resume the talks, a day after Hamas handed mediators its latest response to a U.S.-backed proposal for a deal.

The revival of negotiations appeared to mark another attempt by U.S., Qatari and Egyptian mediators to overcome the gap that has repeatedly thwarted a deal over the past months.

Hamas wants an agreement that ensures Israeli troops fully leave Gaza and the war ends, while Netanyahu says the war cannot end before Hamas is eliminated.
