STORYLINE:
Hurricane Beryl toppled down trees in Jamaica, jumbled fishing boats in Barbados and damaged or destroyed 95% of homes on a pair of islands in St. Vincent and the Grenadines before rumbling past the Cayman Islands early Thursday and taking aim at Mexico.
The category 4 hurricane roared by Jamaica Wednesday, bringing fierce winds and heavy rain.
Wind-whipped rain pounded the island for hours as residents heeded authorities’ call to shelter until the storm had passed. Power was knocked out in much of the capital, Kingston.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness said Wednesday afternoon that nearly 500 people were placed in shelters.
Cleanup crews are diligently clearing roads of debris and fallen trees in response to the storm’s aftermath. No major damage to houses or other structures has been reported.
Beryl is now churning towards the Mexican Caribbean coast.
What had been the earliest storm to develop into a Category 5 hurricane during the weekend, weakened to a Category 3 by early Thursday but remained a major hurricane.
