STORYLINE:
China on Wednesday insisted that it stands “on the side of peace and dialogue” on the Ukraine issue after Finnish President Alexander Stubb questioned China’s role in Russia’s invasion.
During a media interview, Stubb said Russia has become very dependent on China at the moment and the Chinese leader would be able to end Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine with one phone call if he wanted.
Asked about the remark at a daily news briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning steered clear of the point that whether China would consider using its influence on Russia to end the war.
"China and Russia are both independent major countries," Mao said, adding that China would “maintain communication with all parties including Russia and continue to play a constructive role in promoting a political settlement of the crisis."
China has refused to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and offered economic support to help Moscow circumvent Western sanctions.
Separately, Mao dismissed the report issued on Tuesday by the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies suggesting the growing eavesdropping stations spotted in Cuba were linked to China.
Mao justified the country’s cooperation with Cuba as “above board” and allowed no “malicious slander or smear.”
Satellite images show that four active construction sites in Cuba are capable of conducting electronic surveillance operations for Beijing, including one previously unreported site not far from the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay.
