“We actually thought that we could do this. And failing like this with Austria clearly being the better team, with more control over the ball, clearly more goal chances – failing like this hurts a lot. Nevertheless, we can be proud of our team. We did our best, we played well, but unfortunately luck wasn’t on our side today.”

STORYLINE:
Turkey football fans celebrated in Vienna Tuesday evening after winning a gripping knockout clash with Austria in the European Championships.

Supporters from both countries gathered in front of Vienna’s town hall, waving flags and banners as they watched Turkey beat Austria 2-1.

The first Turkish goal came after just 57 seconds with a header from Merih Demiral, the fastest in Euros knockout history.

Austrian fans reacted with shock and disbelief to the Alpine nation’s loss.

“We actually thought that we could do this,” 19-year-old student Niko explained after the game. “Failing like this hurts a lot. Nevertheless, we can be proud of our team.”

Turkish fans on the other hand were exuberant after their team’s victory. The Anatolian side won because they “played with heart” said Emre, a local Turkish fan from Vienna.

Turkey now faces a quarter-final meeting with the Netherlands on Saturday.
