STORYLINE:
Polling stations have closed in Mauritania’s presidential election and ballot counting has begun.
Incumbent President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani is expected to win the election after turning Mauritania into a strategic ally of the West in a region swept by coups and violence.
Mr. Ghazouni is seeking re-election on the promise of security and economic growth.
He is a former army chief and current president of the African Union.
He came to power in 2019 following the first democratic transition in the country’s history, and promised on Saturday to respect the results of the vote.
His opponents have accused him of corruption and mismanagement.
But he remains popular with Mauritanians, who see him as a beacon of stability.
Saturday’s vote unfolded peacefully, according to observers.
The turnout was 40% out of 2 million eligible voters, and partial results were expected on Sunday.
