"We all want to know who ordered the murder of Fernando Villavicencio, beyond the triggermen. Let’s remember that of the first 13 (detainees) seven were killed in jail. About that, we have not been told anything, neither to us as a family, nor to the citizens, nor to the media."

6. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Amanda Villavicencio, Daughter of Fernando Villavicencio:
"We are here because we don’t want any political protagonism or in any way. We want truth and responsibility. As I’ve always said, colleagues, there won’t be any justice because nobody is going to give us back my father. Nobody is going to give us back Fernando Villavicencio, the brave journalist. This is not going to happen. We do deserve that there is a speedy process in due time, we understand that, but one that it is well done. This is the intention."
7. Lawyer Natalia Salazar Brito speaking with journalists
8. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Natalia Salazar Brito, Lawyer for the daughters of Fernando Villavicencio:
"Actually, there is information of relevance, such as the reward for taking the life of the presidential candidate (Fernando Villavicencio), which was 200,000 dollars. This is something that is quite reprehensible against the Ecuadorian State and that we hope is corrected and pertinent measures are taken so as not to systematize impunity in the judicial system."

STORYLINE:
Relatives and supporters of Fernando Villavicencio, the slain Ecuadorian presidential candidate, protested Thursday to demand justice and truth over his assassination.
Villavicencio was not a front-runner in the race, but his assassination in broad daylight less than two weeks before a special presidential election shocked the country.
The trial in his case started earlier this week.
Thirteen people were initially investigated for his assassination, seven of whom were Colombian nationals, arrested on the day of the crime.
The gunman, according to the prosecution, died on the scene after a gun battle with the police.
On October 2023, six of the accused were killed while awaiting trial in prisons in Guayaquil and Quito.
Amanda Villavicencio, daughter of the slain candidate, underscored the killing suspects as something authorities must investigate.
"About that, we have not been told anything, neither to us as a family, nor to the citizens, nor to the media," she said.
The lawyer for the relatives, Natalia Salazar Brito, said the case should be solved to set a precedent so as not to "systematize impunity" in Ecuador.
