STORYLINE:
Iranians in London gathered Friday in front of the consulate and embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, as the country holds elections to choose a successor to the late President Ebrahim Raisi, who was killed in a helicopter crash in May.
A few dozen protesters waved Iranian flags, chanted "women, life, freedom," and booed those going into the consulate to vote.
"Today’s election, the Iranian government election, is not our election. Actually, it’s a selection," said Marcia, an Iranian protester. "I’m here to raise my voice in support of the Iranian people."
Analysts broadly describe the race as a three-way contest. There are two hard-liners: former nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili and parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf. Reformist candidate Masoud Pezeshkian has aligned himself with those seeking a return to the 2015 nuclear deal with world powers.
After record-low turnout in recent elections, it remains unclear how many Iranians will go to the ballot box on Friday.
While 85-year-old Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has the final say on all matters of state, Iran’s president can steer the country toward confrontation or negotiation with the West.
