“I think it just kind of validated the feeling that I was having, that this election is going to be extremely hectic and kind of it’s no longer the conversation, I guess, for the lesser of two evils for me. It’s more of both of these candidates don’t feel like viable options.”

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Arabia Simeon, Detroit voter:
“But we honestly went back to the factory reset of America, choosing between two white men. And that is just disheartening for me as a voter, as a person of color, as a Black person, a queer person. It’s really disheartening to know that no matter how far we come as a country, we’re still going to factory reset when it comes to president and have to make a choice between two white men.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Lexis Zeidan, Detroit voter:
“Biden either needs to change course and change policy, and/or Biden needs to step down. He’s not fit to be president. And again, I think that people are finally recognizing that off of the debate yesterday. And there’s a lot of conversations that need to happen within the next month around what could the Democratic Party do to bring all of its fractured base back to its core and hopefully build strong ahead of November, or we will be looking at a Trump presidency.”

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Lexis Zeidan, Detroit voter:
“Watching the debate yesterday, you had one that lies and you had one that could barely even bring a whole coherent sentence together. And I think that we’re in a really bad place when it comes to our presidential options.”

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Arabia Simeon, Detroit voter:
“So, I think on both sides, Republicans and Democrats, should definitely reconsider who they have as candidates right now. And I know it’s late in the game a little bit for that, but I don’t think it would harm any of the conversation because, again, it just feels like we’re doomed no matter what.”

STORYLINE:
Arabia Simeon (uh-RAY’-bee-uh SIM’-ee-ehn) said the country is “doomed” having to choose between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump.

“I think on both sides, Republicans and Democrats, should definitely reconsider who they have as candidates right now,” the 27-year-old startup business owner from Detroit said Friday while taking a break from work, sitting on a park bench in the shadow of the newly refurbished Michigan Central Station high-rise building. “And I know it’s late in the game a little bit for that. But I don’t think it would harm any of the conversation, because, again, it just feels like we’re doomed no matter what.”

Simeon voted Democratic in the 2016 and 2020 presidential races, but isn’t so sure this time around. Heading into Thursday night’s debate, she was weighing between President Joe Biden and a third-party/independent candidate.

Now, she’s leaning toward the latter.

“I think it just kind of validated the feeling that I was having that this election is going to be extremely hectic, and it’s no longer the conversation of the lesser of two evils for me,” she said. “It’s more like both of these candidates don’t feel like viable options.”

Simeon has concerns about Biden’s age and health and is critical of his handling of the Israel-Hamas war.
