STORYLINE:
Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako of Japan greeted a waiting crowd during their visit to the English city of Oxford on Friday.
People eager to catch a glimpse of the Emperor and Empress as they toured Balliol College at the University of Oxford gathered on the street to take photos and wave Japanese flags.
Their trip to Oxford continued a state visit that began on Tuesday. On Wednesday the couple attended a banquet hosted by King Charles.
They also laid a wreath at Westminster Abbey and toured one of Britain’s premier biomedical research institutes.
The visit comes as the U.K. seeks to bolster its role as the most influential European nation in the Indo-Pacific region.
Both countries look to each other as a source of stability and mutual reassurance at a time of potentially destabilising global political change.
