The UN’s political chief has said the Taliban cannot be a part of the international community until they do more for women and girls in Afghanistan. Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo delivered that message following a UN-led meeting on Afghanistan held in the Qatari capital Doha. Taliban leaders were invited to attend for the first time since their return to power in 2021. The government they formed has cracked down on women’s freedoms, leading to a situation that human rights groups have described as "gender apartheid."
