STORYLINE:
Thousands of people gathered in Tel Aviv on Thursday for the Tribe of Nova’s first mass gathering since Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel.
The massive concert was launched to raise awareness and funds for a support network for Oct. 7 survivors that has sprung up in the chaotic months since the attack.
More than 3,000 people were at the Tribe of Nova electronic music festival on the morning of Oct. 7 last year, when Hamas militants stormed into southern Israel.
The dusty field that hosted the festival was just 3.3 kilometres (about two miles) from the Gaza border.
More than 10 percent – over 360 – of the festival’s attendees were killed as they raced through fields and orchards attempting to flee from Hamas, and others were kidnapped. Some are still being held in Gaza.
Nimrod Arnin lost his sister in the rampage and addressed festival goers from the stage on Thursday.
“The ultimate darkness challenged the big light of the Tribe of Nova, but in a moment of enlightenment we realized what is going to be the essence of our life from now and on," he told the crowd.
"We will dance again!"
Israel’s war against Hamas, now in its ninth month, was launched after the Oct. 7 attack, which killed some 1,200 in total — mostly civilians — and saw about 250 abducted.
Israeli ground offensives and bombardments have since killed more than 37,100 people, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.
Israel faces growing international criticism over the campaign of systematic destruction in Gaza, at a huge cost in civilian lives.
The war has sparked a humanitarian crisis and displaced most of the territory’s 2.3 million population.
