STORYLINE:
The surprise ending of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s yearslong legal battle with U.S. prosecutors failed to shake up the peaceful island of Saipan on Wednesday, as local residents went about their day as usual.

Assange entered his plea in a U.S. district court in Saipan, the capital of the Northern Mariana Islands, as the American commonwealth in the Pacific is relatively close to Assange’s native Australia and accommodated his desire to avoid entering the continental United States.

"Local people don’t care about this (case), because this is under the Federal Court justice, Federal Court section. This is not the local section," taxi driver Awlad Hossain told the Associated Press.

Windsurfer Hiromi Matogolai, who came to the beach with her surf board, said it hadn’t been a talking point.

"I don’t think people are that interested," she told the AP.

Assange returned to his homeland of Australia aboard a charter jet on Wednesday, hours after pleading guilty to obtaining and publishing U.S. military secrets in a deal with Justice Department prosecutors that concludes a drawn-out legal saga.
