STORYLINE:
One day after landing in Haiti, the first contingent of U.N-backed foreign forces invited the press to their campsite at the international airport in Port-au-Prince.

Over two hundred police officers stood dressed in fatigues and helmets, holding automatic weapons to show readiness for the difficult task ahead.

The Kenyans will join the Haitian National Police in the fight against heavily armed and organized gangs that control almost 80% of the country’s capital.

In a press briefing on Tuesday, Prime Minister Garry Conille said the policemen would be deployed in the “next couple of days” but did not give details of their first mission.

The deployment comes nearly four months after gangs launched coordinated attacks, targeting key government infrastructure in Haiti’s capital and beyond.

“While gang violence appears to have receded from its peak earlier this year, the country’s security situation remains dire,” the U.N. Security Council said in a June 21 statement.

More than 2,500 people were killed or injured in the first three months of this year, a more than 50% increase from the same period last year.

As the Kenyan police contingent prepares to go into action in Haiti’s capital, serious incidents were reported in Kenya on Tuesday when protesters stormed the congress in Nairobi, resulting in dozens of deaths.

At least 22 people were killed, the Kenya National Human Rights Commission said.

Commission chairperson Roseline Odede told journalists that 300 others were injured and 50 people were arrested.
