STORYLINE:
Meryl Streep celebrates her 75th birthday Saturday (22 JUNE).
Born in Summit, New Jersey, Streep first discovered a passion for acting after appearing in a college production of "Miss Julie" in 1969, going on to apply for a degree at the Yale School of Drama in 1971.
After graduating, Streep moved to New York and was cast in a stage production of "Trelawny of the Wells," alongside Mandy Patinkin and John Lithgow. After a successful stint on Broadway, Streep’s first film role came in 1977 in the film "Julia," starring Jane Fonda.
Her Hollywood breakthrough came in 1978 when she was cast in "The Deer Hunter" after Robert De Niro noticed her during a theatrical production of "The Cherry Orchard." The performance earned her a supporting actress nod at the 1979 Academy Awards – the first of 21 Oscar nominations to date.
Streep won her first Academy Award the following year for her supporting role in "Kramer vs Kramer," in which she played Dustin Hoffman’s estranged partner, battling over custody of their six-year-old son.
Lead actress nominations then came thick and fast, starting with 1981’s "The French Lieutenant’s Woman." Two years later, Streep picked up her first Best Actress Oscar for "Sophie’s Choice," in which she plays a traumatized Polish refugee harboring a terrible secret.
After "Sophie’s Choice," Streep was back on the lead actress shortlist for 1983’s "Silkwood," 1985’s "Out of Africa," 1987’s "Ironweed" and 1988’s "A Cry in the Dark."
Then there was 1990’s "Postcards from the Edge;" 1995’s "The Bridges of Madison County;" 1998’s "One True Thing" and 1999’s "Music of the Heart."
She received a supporting actress nomination for her performance in 2002’s "Adaptation," before leading roles caught the Oscar judges’ eyes once again with 2006’s "The Devil Wears Prada," 2008’s "Doubt" and 2009’s "Julie and Julia."
