7. SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Evandro Machado, Coordinator of the Cultural center Fazendo a Arte:
"After the pandemic, many people couldn’t get their jobs back on track. Many people who were on the poverty line have fallen below the poverty line. So the work we do is very important. It’s a shame that this (food distribution) doesn’t happen every day because, unfortunately, there are other communities that also need to be served."

study that shows around 2 million people (7.8% of residents) live with some degree of food insecurity, whether mild, moderate, or severe, and almost 500,000 people go hungry.

The study, developed by Federal University (UFRJ) and the City Council of Rio de Janeiro, mapped the places with the highest incidence of food poverty, and will serve as a basis for guiding public policies to combat poverty.

"For us who work in Rio de Janeiro, we know that this is the reality for a part of the population, unfortunately," said Rodrigo Fernandes Afonso, director with NGO Ação da Cidadania.

For 30 years, the NGO, founded by sociologist Herbert de Souza, known as Betinho, has been tirelessly working to combat hunger and poverty.
