STORYLINE:
Moderate Iranian presidential candidate Masoud Pezeshkian held his biggest campaign meeting yet in the capital city of Tehran late Wednesday.
Pezeshkian, a surgeon and a member of parliament, is backed by the country’s reformists and moderates, including former foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.
Zarif, who attended Wednesday’s rally, negotiated a historic nuclear deal with world powers in 2015, which fell apart after then U.S president Donald Trump withdrew from in 2018.
Pezeshkian has said he supports negotiations with the west to remove sanctions imposed by the U.S and Western nations.
During the event, Zarif vowed hardliners inside and outside the country would be foiled if Pezeshkian wins the election, which will be held on June 28.
Iranian officials describe U.S republicans – mainly Donald Trump and Israeli foreign minister Benjamin Netanyahu – as hardliners and extremists.
Pezeshkian is competing against five hardline candidates for the presidency after former president Ebrahim Raisi died in a helicopter crash last month.
