"She was raped because she was a woman, a young girl and because she was Jewish. This sexism and antisemitism are unbearable today. We cannot tolerate that every day 250 women and girls are victims of rape and we cannot tolerate today that antisemitism and racism are so at ease which lead to crimes such as the one that this young girl was a victim of."

10. SOUNDBITE (French) Arié Alimi, lawyer and vice-president of the League of Human Rights:
“For some time now there is an awareness that there is antisemitism also on the Left and that we need to address it. Some of the speeches during the campaign of the European clections have crossed red lines which can have a negative impact in people’s minds. Today it’s the camp of Left, of the progressives that is gathered with all the people that are worried by antisemitism and all the racisms in France, in a particular political moment with a Far Right that possibly can arrive to power, a Far Right that is consubstantial with antisemitism, since its origins."

STORYLINE:
Hundreds of people gathered at Bastille square in Paris to protest against the alleged rape of a 12-year-old Jewish girl in a suspected antisemitic attack.
The protesters were answering a call from various leftist parties, unions and NGOs a day after two adolescent boys in a Paris suburb were given preliminary charges of raping the girl and religion-motivated violence.
A Jewish leader has said the girl is Jewish.
The incident sent shockwaves throughout France, and
thrust concerns about antisemitism to the forefront of campaigning for the country’s legislative elections.
The National Rally party, which has tried to shed historical links to antisemitism, has its first real chance of forming a government if it comes out on top of the two-round elections that end July 7, as polls forecast. It would be the first far-right force to lead a French government since the Nazi occupation.
Far-left figures, meanwhile, have also faced accusations of antisemitism linked to their response to Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel and the ensuing war.
France has the largest Jewish population in Europe, and the largest Muslim population in western Europe.
Lawyer and Jewish leader Elie Korchia said in an interview with French broadcaster BFM that the girl is Jewish and that Palestine was mentioned during the attack.
French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal wrote on X that the girl was “raped because she’s Jewish,” identifying it as an antisemitic attack, while French President Emmanuel Macron called on schools to hold a “discussion hour” on racism and antisemitism.
