“Vietnam knows really well that it cannot really displease any of the three powers: Russia, China or the United States. But it has different benefits in maintaining relationship with different powers. For China, it wants to maintain a very strong, robust trade and economic partnership and also a strong party to party partnership. For Russia, it wants to maintain a good friend because Russia provides most of its arms and also provides a reassurance against Chinese in the South China Sea. For the United States, it provides economic and trade benefits and also provides another shelter, another safety net for Vietnam to counter Chinese influence in region.”

STORYLINE:
Preparations were underway in Vietnam’s capital hours before Russian President Vladimir Putin’s expected arrival on Wednesday.
This will be Putin’s first state visit to the Southeast Asian country since 2017 and his fifth in total. He is scheduled to meet Vietnam’s most powerful politician, Communist Party Secretary General Nguyen Phu Trong, the new president To Lam, and other politicians during his two-day visit.
Vietnamese and Russian flags are hanging side by side and road blockers are propped up on streets leading the the Presidential Palace in Hanoi, where Putin is scheduled to meet with Vietnamese leaders on Thursday.
"Vietnam knows really well that it cannot really displease any of the three powers: Russia, China or the United States. But it has different benefits in maintaining relationship with different powers", said Nguyen Khac Giang, a political analyst.
"For Russia, it wants to maintain a good friend because Russia provides most of its arms and also provides a reassurance against Chinese in the South China Sea", he added.
Putin’s trip to Hanoi, right after his stop in Pyongyang, comes at a time when Moscow is facing growing international isolation because of its military actions in Ukraine.
