“I came to take the body of my husband Momir Milenkovic who was kidnapped on 29 August 1999. He went to visit our house in Prizren, where he was kidnapped and was taken to an unknown location. Until now we knew nothing about his fate. Now we know and that’s it.”

7. SOUNDBITE (Serbian) Veljko Odalovic, head of Serbian commission for missing persons:
”These bodies were in Pristina morgue, which still has more than 300 unidentified bodies, among which more than 90 are Serb nationals. This is worrying because collaboration with Pristina, especially with the working group for missing persons, has come to a complete stop for some years.”

STORYLINE:
Serbian authorities and family members on Tuesday received the remains of three ethnic Serbs who went missing during the 1998-1999 conflict in Kosovo.

The remains were handed over at the border between Serbia and Kosovo, a former Serbian province whose 2008 declaration of independence Belgrade does not recognise.

The fighting erupted in 1998 when separatist ethnic Albanians launched a rebellion and Serbia responded with a brutal crackdown.

The war ended after NATO bombing forced Serbia to pull out of the territory.

Hundreds of people remain missing long after the war, both ethnic Albanians and ethnic Serbs.

Talks aimed at normalizing relations between the Balkan rivals have been stalled.
