STORYLINE:
Rescue teams and local residents rushed Monday to search through the mud for more victims of a landslide in central Ecuador that killed at least eight people.

Heavy rains drenched over the weekend several provinces of Ecuador, but the community of Baños was one of the most affected when a hill partially collapsed Sunday over some houses and vehicles.

The Risk Management office said in a press release that besides the 8 people killed, there are still 11 others missing and 22 more were injured.

Baños is about 135 kilometers (84 miles) south of the capital, Quito. The city is known among tourists as a jumping-off point for adventures in the Amazon jungle.

“Pain, sadness, accepting the inevitable for the family,” said Edgar Paredes, as he described the loss of his son in the landslide.

Rescue teams and locals were removing some debris by hand, but there were moments that they needed to use some heavy machinery.

The initial death toll Sunday was of six people dead, but the authorities reported Monday two more bodies were retrieved.

Across Ecuador, storms caused other landslides and flooding on at least 13 provinces in total, destroying some bridges and highways, severing the main road connecting Ecuador’s highlands to its Amazonian provinces.

Two more people died in two different provinces, the Risk Management office added.
