STORYLINE:
Egyptians looking for an affordable getaway during the Eid al-Adha holiday are going for a swim in the scenic Nile River, enjoying the festive time in its cool waters.
Revelers are escaping Egypt’s summer heat by taking a dip in a branch of the Nile adjacent to the city of al-Qanatir al-Khayriyyah, north of Cairo.
"We are now observing the Eid al-Adha and people are coming here to get into the water to avoid the hot weather," said Saad Mohamed, an Egyptian from al-Qanatir al-Khayriyyah.
"This area is a getaway for the poor. Everyone who does not have money comes here," he added.
To mark the festive time, Fares Rabeaa brings his children to al-Qanatir al-Khayriyyah every Eid holiday.
"As you can see the children are playing and enjoying the games," he said.
One of the biggest Islamic holidays, the occasion commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s test of faith through slaughtering livestock and animals and distributing the meat to the poor.
It’s a joyous occasion for which food is a hallmark where devout Muslims buy and slaughter animals and share two-thirds of the meat with the poor.
The Eid is also a revered observance that coincides with the final rites of the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.
